How to Wear Socks

Let’s talk about socks. You might think you’ve got this– I mean, how hard can it be? You just pull ‘em up and go, right? Wrong! There’s more to this sock game than meets the eye.

How to wear them

Let’s talk sock cuffs. A common mistake is pulling up your socks and leaving the cuff all creased and scrunched. Not only does this look sloppy, but it also causes that dreaded tightness around your legs. Many people think having sock rings around your ankles is normal, but it's not. Either the elastic on your socks is too tight or you're not wearing them correctly. Although upgrading to soft-cuff socks really helps, you still need to wear them properly. Smooth out those cuffs and feel the difference!

Size

Now, onto size. So many people wear the wrong size socks. If you’re a size 7 shoe and your 4-7 socks feel tight, bump up a size. Remember, socks go on your legs too, and a size too small just messes with circulation. A size too big and you have too much material hanging off your feet making an unpleasant wearing experience. They will probably slide down your legs too and scrunch up making you look a little silly. Always know your size and take care to check size guides when buying.

What Not To Do

Lastly, please don’t yank your socks up so tight they’re like sardines in a tin. This suffocates your toes and leads to holes (especially with super long toenails) because the fabric is stretched too thin. Give your toes a little breathing room to keep your socks hole-free and comfy. Reinforced socks are certainly stronger to avoid these holes, but nothing lasts forever and stretching the material to its max over your toes will only reduce the socks' lifespan as well as the change in your pocket.

Socks Fashion

Everybody has their own style. What is fashionable? If you decide to wear pink socks with your bright red three-piece suit, well, not everyone will think it looks cool. That said, there are generally easy fashion rules to follow, so let's dive into the world of sock fashion. When it comes to sock choices, it’s all about matching the vibe of the event.

Formal Wear

Darker colours like black, navy, and grey are your go-to for formal occasions. They're classic, sophisticated, and won't steal the spotlight from your snazzy suit.

But hey, we live in modern times, and even formal wear is getting a splash of personality. A subtle pop of colour or a tasteful pattern can add some flair without overstepping boundaries.

Casual Wear

Now, for casual wear, the sky's the limit! Socks with prints, jokes, and a riot of colours are perfect for adding a fun twist to your outfit. Think funky patterns, quirky designs, and bright colours. These are the socks that let you show off your personality.

And here's the kicker – with the rise of casual workwear and more relaxed dress codes, people are rocking trainers with professional outfits. This means fun, colourful, and even printed socks are making their way into workplaces that once demanded strict formality. So, whether you’re keeping it classic or adding a playful touch, there’s a perfect pair of socks for each occasion.

Sports Socks

Gym and trainer socks are the go-to for physical activity because they're designed specifically for the job. They withstand the friction from trainers better than other socks, so they don't fall apart as quickly. You can still rock other socks at the gym, and it's becoming quite fashionable. Just keep in mind they might not last as long.

Matching Socks

Matching socks to your T-shirt, shorts, leggings, and other clothing pieces is the height of fashion in 2024. Many people opt for plain, print-free T-shirts and add a splash of colour with bright socks. It’s a stylish way to stand out. Experiment with colours and styles you like and find what works best for you.
